Linking Book Care, Troubleshooting, and Quality Assurance Tests
Q: How can I properly care for and charge my Linking Book?
A: The best way to care for your Linking Book will be to follow instructions for care in the paper included with the book.
We recommend keeping your Linking Book (regardless of whether or not it has the LCD panel included with it) out of direct sunlight. Additionally, we recommend keeping it in a cool, dry place.
If you have the LCD panel built in to your Linking Book, use the charging cable that came with the book, and use a power source properly rated for the battery, which is a rechargeable 3.7V DC 800mAh, 2.96Wh lithium battery with acceptable Input of 5V DC, 1A. Close the cover of the linking book after each use to preserve the battery’s life and integrity.
Q: Seeing as how the books were manufactured around 8 years ago, how will I know that the book will still function?
A: A random sample we tested recently of “untouched” books from this batch manufactured in 2018 all still had working displays, speakers, and batteries capable of holding a reasonable charge given the amount of time it has been since the initial manufacture date. If you are interested in our test process and results, read more on that below.
The linking book may need to be charged before first use. Keep in mind that charging cycles, environmental storage factors, and more can impact the existing battery’s capability of holding a charge. Although a charging cable comes with the book, you must provide your own power supply rated for the requirements noted on documentation within the box.
Please see our Limited Warranty for contacting Cyan in the event of an issue with your book purchased from store.cyan.com within the warranty period.
Q: My linking book battery won’t charge. How can I fix this?
A: We recommend folks make sure that they are using the charging cable that came with the LCD panel version of the linking book, in addition to using a power source that is rated for the charging requirements listed on the document included with the book.
If trying that does not solve the charging issue, the battery may indeed be dead. This can be the result of a variety of factors, including (but not limited to) environmental storage factors and how many cycles the battery has been through, and is sadly normal behavior for most modern rechargeable batteries around the world – including the one included in the book.
The battery in the Myst 25th Anniversary linking book is not accessible without disassembling the book itself. The book should not be (and was not designed to be) disassembled so we do not have any guidance or recommendation we can provide to replace the battery at this time.

Cyan’s Myst 25th Anniversary Linking Book functionality tests, performed from 10/17/25 to 10/24/25
A random selection of 5 linking books with LCD screens initially manufactured in 2018 and stored in a room-temperature, low-humidity environment were used for this test.
October 17th, 2025: Before being charged, each book display reported a nearly depleted battery charge. The books were then charged until they all reported a fully charged battery on each display. Following this, the books were unplugged and left alone for one full week at a stable room temperature .
October 24th, 2025: All linking books were opened on this day for the first time in a week. Every book displayed 100% charge on the display. Each book then automatically played video and audio properly with audio at 100% volume for 20 minutes, then left to play for an additional 25 minutes with audio manually set to 0% volume before being manually closed (therefore turning off the display again). No elements of the book were hot to touch at either interval.
The books were then re-opened, and each display indicated an average of about 70% power remaining on their current charge. They continued to play video and audio normally for a short period of time, upon which they were manually closed again. Re-opening the books 30 minutes later indicated the same level of charge.
October 31st, 2025: All linking books were opened on this day for the first time in a week. Each book displayed the same amount of power left as they last indicated a week prior, and both audio and video played normally. The books were then promptly closed again.
November 10th, 2025: All linking books were opened on this day for the first time since October 31st. Each book displayed the same amount of power left as they indicated on October 31st, and both audio and video played normally. The books were then promptly closed again.
