Can I still play Myst on Quest 1?
For a long time now, Myst has stood out as one of the apps on the Meta Quest store that still supports Quest 1. We are proud of our accomplishments in launching Myst on Quest with support for both Quest 1 and 2 in December 2020, in addition to releasing many support & feature updates for Myst on Quest over the last two and a half years.
Please note that due to newer Meta software updates preventing the support of new features for Quest 1 moving forward, and our desire to make sure Myst supports the latest and greatest software & hardware while continuing to update the game with new content and features, we must cease Quest 1 support in Myst on October 1st, 2023 by freezing the build of Myst available on Quest 1. Additionally, this build freeze capability is completely dependent on the feature availability of it from Meta. If there are complications with how this capability works, or if there are future software or hardware updates completely out of our control that affect availability, performance, or general stability of Myst on Quest 1, or if Meta announces new requirements for what frozen builds must adhere to (for example, if new content or features coming to the game must also be available on games that offer a Quest 1 version regardless of the build freeze or not), the build may become completely inaccessible on Quest 1 on or after this October 1st date without advance notice like this. We do not plan for this to be the case, but we also did not previously plan to have to freeze Quest 1 support of Myst to begin with.
As a studio that has been around for over 35 years, we’ve seen many operating systems and different hardware platforms go through similar growing pains, albeit this one being one of the more extreme examples of deprecation. With some of our games being on digital stores for longer than 10+ years, we pride ourselves in being able to maintain and continue offering our decades-old award-winning games to folks. However, there almost always come a time in which software or hardware deprecation force us to make tough decisions like this, and we can no longer provide the experience folks expect us to in those cases.
Thank you for the support over the years, and we are excited to continue putting new life into Myst for Quest 2, Quest Pro, and beyond.
Sincerely,
The team at Cyan
